같이 is written with ㅌ but pronounced [가치]. This change toward a ㅈ or ㅊ sound before 이 is called 구개음화, or palatalization.

What Does 발음 규칙 5. 구개음화 Mean?

When final ㄷ or ㅌ is followed by the vowel 이 through a grammatical boundary, it is commonly pronounced as ㅈ or ㅊ. The spelling does not change.

The Rule

ㄷ + 이 → 지 sound: 굳이 [구지], 해돋이 [해도지]. ㅌ + 이 → 치 sound: 같이 [가치], 밭이 [바치], 끝이 [끄치]. Practice the complete words and phrases.

B: 아니요, 보통 [가치]라고 발음해요. — No, it is normally pronounced [가치].
A: 같이 가요. [가치 가요] — Let’s go together.
B: 네, 자연스러워요. — Yes, that sounds natural.

A Common Mistake to Avoid

Do not rewrite 같이 as 가치 unless 가치 itself means “value.” Sound and spelling must stay separate. Also do not assume every sequence containing 디 or 티 changes; this rule concerns specific final-consonant and 이 environments.
