What Does N(이/가) 아니에요 Mean?
N이/가 아니에요 means “am not,” “is not,” or “are not.” It is the negative form used when something or someone is not a certain noun.
The Rule
Consonant + 이 아니에요
학생 → 학생이 아니에요.
I am not a student.
물 → 물이 아니에요.
It is not water.
Vowel + 가 아니에요
의사 → 의사가 아니에요.
I am not a doctor.
오렌지 → 오렌지가 아니에요.
It is not an orange.

Correcting a misunderstanding
A: 일본 사람이에요? — Are you Japanese?
B: 아니요, 일본 사람이 아니에요. 영국 사람이에요. — No, I’m not Japanese. I’m British.
아니요 and 아니에요 do different jobs
아니요 is a short reply meaning “no.” 아니에요 is the predicate used to say that something is not a particular noun. Write a space before 아니에요: 학생이 아니에요. The standard spelling is 아니에요, not 아니예요. A negative reply becomes more useful when you add the correct information in the next sentence.
