What Does N(이/가) 아니에요 Mean?
N이/가 아니에요 means “am not,” “is not,” or “are not.” It is the negative form used when something or someone is not a certain noun.
The Rule
Consonant + 이 아니에요
학생 → 학생이 아니에요.
I am not a student.
물 → 물이 아니에요.
It is not water.
Vowel + 가 아니에요
의사 → 의사가 아니에요.
I am not a doctor.
오렌지 → 오렌지가 아니에요.
It is not an orange.

Correcting a misunderstanding
A: 일본 사람이에요? — Are you Japanese?
B: 아니요, 일본 사람이 아니에요. 영국 사람이에요. — No, I’m not Japanese. I’m British.
아니요 and 아니에요 do different jobs
아니요 is a short reply meaning “no.” 아니에요 is the predicate used to say that something is not a particular noun. Write a space before 아니에요: 학생이 아니에요. The standard spelling is 아니에요, not 아니예요. A negative reply becomes more useful when you add the correct information in the next sentence.

Correct a misunderstanding politely
Goal: say what something is not, then supply the correct information. A negative sentence is especially useful when you follow it with a short positive sentence.

Practise a correction, not just a blank
A: 선생님이에요? — Are you a teacher?
B: 아니요, 선생님이 아니에요. 학생이에요. — No, I am not a teacher. I am a student.
Keep 아니요 as the short reply and 아니에요 as the sentence ending. Now repeat with 의사 (doctor) and 요리사 (cook). Say the correction without looking.
Three situations
① Someone thinks your water is coffee. Correct them and say it is water. ② Someone thinks you are a teacher, but you are a student. ③ Someone thinks an apple is an orange. Correct them and identify the apple.
Model answers and explanations
① 커피가 아니에요. 물이에요. ② 선생님이 아니에요. 학생이에요. ③ 오렌지가 아니에요. 사과예요. 커피 and 오렌지 take 가 because they end in vowels. 선생님 takes 이 because it ends in a consonant. In the positive sentences, 물 and 학생 take 이에요, while 사과 takes 예요.
Now correct this sentence: 이것은 커피이 아니예요. Then add “It is water.”
Answers and explanation
이것은 커피가 아니에요. 물이에요. 커피 ends in a vowel, so choose 가. 물 ends in a consonant, so use 물이에요 in the positive sentence.
