Try a proverb before opening the book
A proverb becomes easier to remember when you can connect it to a situation. Consider 시작이 반이다, literally “Starting is half the task.” It encourages someone to begin instead of waiting until everything feels perfect. It does not mean that doing the first step literally completes half of every job.
Imagine a learner who wants to practice Korean but keeps postponing it because speaking feels embarrassing. Today, the learner finally says one sentence aloud. A friend replies 시작이 반이야! — “Getting started is half the battle!” Here the proverb recognizes the value of beginning. The casual ending -야 suits a close friend; the dictionary-style proverb ends in -다.
Which situation fits?
A. Someone finally begins a task they have been putting off.
B. Someone has already finished every part of the task.
Answer: A. The encouragement focuses on taking the first step. B is better suited to congratulations on completing the work.
