Want to say “I am a student,” “She is a doctor,” or “This is a book” in Korean? Then N이에요/예요 is the perfect place to start! It is one of the first Korean grammar patterns every beginner should learn.
What Does N이에요/예요 Mean?
N이에요/예요 is used after a noun and works like “am,” “is,” or “are” in English.
학생이에요.
I am a student.
Another example: 의사 (doctor)
의사예요.
I am a doctor.
책이에요.
It is a book.
The Rule: 이에요 or 예요?
It’s easy. Just look at the last sound of the noun.
Consonant + 이에요
학생 + 이에요 → 학생이에요.
student → I am a student.
책 + 이에요 → 책이에요.
book → It is a book.
Vowel + 예요
의사 + 예요 → 의사예요.
doctor → I am a doctor.
가수 + 예요 → 가수예요.
singer → I am a singer.

Check the noun, not the English translation
Use the final sound of the Korean noun to choose the ending. 리나 ends in a vowel, so 리나예요 is correct. 민수 also ends in a vowel; 학생 ends in the consonant ㅇ, so 학생이에요 is correct. Attach the ending directly to the noun without a space. The same sentence can describe “I,” “you,” or another person when the situation makes the subject clear.
