When an action happens somewhere, use 에서.

What Does N에서 Mean?

Place + 에서 + Action

도서관에서 공부해요.

에 → destination / existence / time

Destination, then action

A: 어디에 가요? — Where are you going?
B: 도서관에 가요. — I’m going to the library.
A: 도서관에서 뭐 해요? — What do you do at the library?
B: 한국어를 공부해요. — I study Korean.

Read the whole sentence

The same place can take different particles. 도서관에 가요 describes a destination; 도서관에서 공부해요 describes an activity there. 도서관에 있어요 describes being there. Avoid deciding from the place noun alone. 에서 also has other uses, including a starting point, but this lesson focuses on where an activity happens.

Practice in context

Use 에 or 에서: ① 식당___ 가요. ② 식당___ 점심을 먹어요. ③ 친구가 식당___ 있어요.
